EAA Chapter 309 was founded in 1973 by a small group of aviation enthusiasts.  Since that time, the membership has grown in size and experience. Members come with a variety of skill and experiences. Current members have aviation backgrounds ranging from student pilot all the way to Airline Transport Pilot. Several are A&Ps and all share a love of aviation. Membership is open to anyone interested in aviation and learning about the construction of Experimental Aircraft.

Chapter 309 is planning to build a home at Gastonia Municipal Airport. Chapter activities include visiting member projects, seminars, fly-ins, Young Eagle Flights, and a good dose of Hangar Flying!

HOMEBUILDER'S SEMINAR

This workshop was developed to give prospective homebuilders an idea of what is involved in building an airplane.
The seminar was conducted by members of Charlotte, NC's EAA Chapter 309 on Saturday, April 22. The location was David Border's backyard workshop - actually a very nice 30' x 40' workshop well equipped with tools, air, lights, electricity, and the chapter's aircraft building tool boxes.
Bob Thayer provided an introduction of the day's planned activities and introduced the instructors. Then each participant introduced themselves, and gave an overview of what they were thinking about building. Most were thinking of building an RV (or had already started), others were there to learn more about homebuilding in general.
Topics covered in the morning session included:

  • FAA Regulations and Licensing - Ronnie Brown

  • Shop and Airplane Building Safety - Bill Repucci

  • Tools - Andy Moscarelli
