EAA Chapter 309 was founded in 1973 by a small group of aviation enthusiasts.  Since that time, the membership has grown in size and experience. Members come with a variety of skill and experiences. Current members have aviation backgrounds ranging from student pilot all the way to Airline Transport Pilot. Several are A&Ps and all share a love of aviation. Membership is open to anyone interested in aviation and learning about the construction of Experimental Aircraft.
Chapter 309 is currently looking for a new home at one of the area airports. Chapter activities include visiting member projects, seminars, fly-ins, Young Eagle Flights, and a good dose of Hangar Flying!

New Newsletter Format

This will be a trial run of the chapter's newsletter for 2006.  With the increasing mailing and copying costs (stamps are going up 39 cents starting in January).  This is a mailing cost of $30 per month or $360 per year or the equivalent of 14 member's dues just to mail the newsletter.  Since nearly all of our members are now on the internet with e-mail, we would like to either e-mail the or let members read their newsletter at the Chapter Web site www.eaa309.org

We will e-mail the membership after the first of each month to let you know that the newsletter is available and how  to get it.  I will publish it in two formats, web page and an Adobe Acrobat "PDF" file which you can download and print if you like.

The internet based newsletters can contain more color pictures which are much better than the poor quality black and white photos that we had to use in the paper copies.

A nice feature of the new PDF file software that I now have is the ability to create a locked file which requires a password.  I will use this to keep a current  copy of the membership list that will be locked out to the internet hackers and spam artists.  I will mail this password to current members.

If you have a slow internet connection or otherwise need a hard copy of the newsletter, let me know.

President's Corner by John Wigney

Hmmmm, it's time again for a newsletter item. December seems to be a quiet time so I do not have a lot to report. This is a good time to look through all the magazines and lust for those indispensable gadgets and gizmos in Sport Aviation, AOPA Pilot, Kit Planes and the Aircraft Spruce catalog. Maybe you can get your spouse to send off for that Garmin 396 to go in the Christmas stocking - NOT!

The chapter membership is healthy and we now have 78 members with 4 Technical Counselors and 2 Flight Advisors. We did have an excellent Christmas dinner meeting at the Acropolis on Monday, 12.12.05. There was a good turn out and Ravi Thakkar's Chinese Gift Giving went over very well. I believe the wine and chocolates box was probably the most popular item and changed hands the most, followed by a fine coffee table book? Dale Ensing's 'flying pig' got the most laughs - that was good.

Regarding the Gastonia hangar project, we are completing the drawing package for inquiry with Wally Overton's invaluable help. So we should have firm construction prices soon.

We look forward to our chapter visit on Saturday 12.31.05 to the US Airways simulator facility. If we are fortunate, we may be able to get some "rides" in an Airbus 320.

I would like to thank all the many board and chapter members who have worked hard this year to conduct the chapter busi
ness and to make our many events such a success. You have also made my job a lot easier. In partic
