EAA Chapter 309

Dinner Meeting Minutes

September 19, 2005

The monthly dinner meeting was held beginning at 7:00 pm at the Captains Galley Restaurant, 11032 E Independence Blvd with approximately 20 people attending.

Ronnie Brown led the meeting (president John Wigney and VP Ravi Thakkar did not attend the meeting).  John had extended his regrets as he was working with Katrina relief efforts.  Ronnie and Wally Overton gave an update on the Gastonia Hangar project – the Gastonia City Council has approved our request to lease land at the Gastonia airport.  Next steps will include obtaining engineering specifications from the building supplier.  These will be used to obtain the necessary building permits.

Sam Stewart gave an update of the submission of documents to the IRS for 501.c.3 certification as a non profit organization.  The documents have been received by the IRS but it could be an additional 200 days before we hear back from the IRS.

Sam and Kevin Cromie gave an update on the fundraising efforts.  Sam and Kevin will be contacting the membership to begin finalizing donations, loans and funds to fully fund construction of the new home for EAA 309 at Gastonia.

Next was a discussion about the upcoming events at Monroe – US Airrace and the November 5 Fly-In at Lincolnton.  Folks were invited to participate on Thursday and Friday (September 28 & 29) at Monroe.  We will be serving breakfast beginning at 7:00 AM on Friday.

A sign up sheet was passed around for the Lincolnton event.

Gary Witt made a presentation featuring pictures of his recent trip to Wisconsin.  He attended the Grassroots Fly-in at Brodhead, WI. It is nearly 600 miles and 6.5 hours with one fuel stop in Seymour, IN.

The club has a fish-boil on Friday night and pork chop dinner on Saturday night.  Grassroots is presented by the Midwest Antique Airplane Club of Brodhead. It is in my opinion the best antique and classic fly-in in the lower forty eight. The CD I will show was done by my high school friend and cohort from 1945, Frank Baker. Frank has owned his Piper Cub for 39 years. You will see lots of Cubs in the presentation.

It is a three day event but nearly everyone is gone by noon Sunday. I arrived on Thursday as did John Baker (Frank's brother) from Denver, CO. There were Standards, Wacos, a Gruman Widgeon, Cubs, de Havilland Tiger Moths, Champs, Aeronca C-3's, WWI replicas flying continuously during the event. There was a replica of the Curtiss Pusher and a Bleriot XI. The Tiger Moth gave rides continuously during its visit as did an RV-4 and the Widgeon"

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 PM.
